Sofia’s Tardis: Me & The Doctor

A column for Whovians by a Whovian!

Special thanks to Sofia C. for sharing her fandom!

TardisI am a die hard Whovian. I love it all; from the very beginning with William Hartnell all the way to the current, Peter Capoldi. When I hear someone say “Doctor” I instantly think “Doctor Who?” and all of my friends want to kill me. Once you get me started, it is very hard to get me to stop. You know of the term “don’t listen to that, cause then your ears will bleed?”

Yeah, that would be what happens if you let me go off about The Doctor.

Which Regeneration is my favorite?

I love Tom Baker, and David Tennant. But in the end I really love them all for they are all the Doctor. I was first introduced to Doctor Who by an old friend of mine named Joe back in 2009. David Tennant was my first doctor, and it was an INSTANT love affair. DOCTOR WHO

I could not tell you which episode is my favorite; I love them all. I could not tell you which one touched me the most; I cry through most of them. I get the “feels” for all of the episodes, and I get the tears for all the sad ones. They all mean so much to me, and they all are a day in The Doctor’s shoes. Each teach you a lesson if you want to learn, and each one shows you a side of The Doctor that you may not have noticed before. The Doctor is both kind and cruel, both optimistic and pessimistic, and both adventurous and cautious, you take it in strides. But one thing that you will always notice is that The Doctor is a sad and lonely man. He can never be left alone to think of the friend’s of the past, choices he could have changed, or people he could have saved. It eats him on the inside, and he tries very hard to hide it from you. The Doctor ALWAYS needs a companion, or maybe two.

companionI could tell you which episode you have to watch first, to make you a fan, but by doing that I take away the chance for you to fall in love with him on your own pace. I don’t recommend a specific episode, I recommend them all. You don’t have to watch them in any order, but so semblance of chronological order is recommended  just so you don’t get TOO confused in the canon.

You can start from the very beginning; 1963 with William Hartnell, or you can start with the revival of Doctor Who in 2005 with Christopher Eccelston. It does not matter to me where you start. To me, the beginning episodes (1963- 1989) start a little on the boring side, and the only thing to keep you going is your fandom of the show, to know where it all started. But that does not mean I HATE the early episodes, it just means I like the revival episodes more. But I still love them all! In the end, the only thing that I ask is that you just give the show a try.

doctors
Start on an episode and just go with it. Ask around if you want, but just lick it up where YOU want to start, or ask a Whovian friend to show you “the ropes”.

drwhofathersday5But, if you want me to give a recommendation on which one to watch, then I have three choices for you. Either start with Christopher Eccelston, for he explains A LOT of information (yet an episode with walking mannequins is not everyone’s thing right up front). In series one, my favorite episode would have to be Episode 8: “Father’s Day”. It is a heartwarming episode in which the Doctor and Rose go back in time so Rose can see her father that she never met, but a quick decision changes history and thus causes problems in the time rift. Will the Doctor and Rose be able to fix the mistake Rose has made??? (Watch out for MAJOR feels in this episode)Or you can start with series two where David Tennant (*drools*) shows up, in this series you can see the love between the Doctor and his companion grow and thus all the feels come into play with this heart warming series.

toothandclawIn series two I have a tough choices in picking my favorite episode, so I will tell you which ones are my three favorite episodes. First off is Episode 2: “Tooth and Claw” the Doctor and Rose go back to 1879 with Queen Victoria, and you almost immediately start to laugh with Rose’s horrible Scottish accent and the way the Doctor reacts to it (for those that do not know! David Tennant IS Scottish), the episode has a wonderful twist Nd starts with a good mystery that they add onto actual history and it ends AMAZINGLY.

girl in the fireplaceMy next favorite episode would have to be, Episode 4: “The Girl In The Fireplace” (*le siiiigh*) such an amazing episode. Versailles, Madam De Pompadour, what is there NOT to love about this episode? It has a sad ending, but you get used to that in Doctor Who but it is still an episode to sit down, watch, and enjoy. I will let this episode explain itself, because it is just THAT awesome.

Now last, but NEVER the least, Episode 13: “Doomsday” this is the last episode of the series and you really have to watch episode 12 to fully understand it, but I love this episode because (in my opinion) it has the most feels of the entire second series. It is the end of the line for The Doctor’s companion Rose, and you will cry your heart and eyes out every time you watch the episode. (I know that I did, and do). The earth is once again threatened and the The Doctor has some tough decisions to make to save the day once more. What will the doctor do to save the day, and how in the end, will the day turn out to be when he is done saving it??doomsday
So there you have it my faithful Whovians, those are my recommendations and choices for what to start out with. You have my opinions, now it is time to go out and make your own thoughts on the wonderful show. Just remember, there IS a reason as to why it just recently won the Guinness book of world records for being the “LONGEST RUNNING SCI-FI SHOW”. Why? Because it is just THAT good, and we can not get enough of it! Now then, Are you ready to go? Well then my friend, in the MANY words of the WONDERFUL Doctor….

And of course

Music Mondays: ONE OK ROCK 「じぶんROCK」

ONE OK ROCK 1

I initially fell in love with ONE OK ROCK when I heard their song, The Beginning, at the end of the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie.

Since then, I’ve been exploring their rather extensive discography and have landed on a new favorite on more than one occasion. This (surprise, surprise) is one of those occasions.

Jibun Rock is an incredible upbeat anthem celebrating self expression amidst a sea of doubts and against the tide of uniformity and indifference. It loudly proclaims that life is best when lived for something– even if you’re still searching for what that something is.

ONE OK ROCK 4Not only do I love the lyrics (transposed below in romaji and then translated), but the music video has this classic MTV vibe as it switches back and forth from the band rocking out next to static-filled screens and a sketchy cartoonized story of what happens when we buy the homogenized fulfillment someone else is selling. A little over the top? Sure. But it gets the message across and will likely get your head nodding and heels bouncing!

Translation:ONE OK ROCK 5

Have you woken up today remembering what to believe in?
Even as the hours pass, it seems like I can no longer believe in the times
I am unaware of the symptoms of this condition
Only the method to preventing it:
“I have to not lie to myself”

No way I’m going to forget it all!!
Even if I’m no longer myself
I will find meaning to this life, even if it’s just living
I got rid of the voice that refused to shout
I will keep on singing and screaming
Until it reaches you, I won’t stop!!

Today you keep on turning around
Not stopping regardless of who might be crying or getting mad
Even if it seems like this cold won’t ever go way
We’re continuing on without stopping just like life does
That’s right, even if there are wrinkles and folds,
people today can’t join their hands together!

Who will be able to let me finish something?
Even if it ends, a new beginning will start straight away
Even if you’re being forced to raise the standard of what you think is a miracle
Already the miracle is those who you call irreplaceable companions!

We are alive…
You going on…
Me going on…
(Nothing to you)
Without you…!

ONE OK ROCK 8WOW! It’s like hearing “no way, no way” over and over
That has nothing to do with the practical problem!
Take what you can: the important things.
Fortify yourself with it.
Hey, will this be it? Not yet, not yet! There’s still time!
Now armed with foresight, I’m honing my skills
The protagonist’s just one person! My story begins!

MTAC (Middle Tennessee Anime Convention) 2014

The Middle Tennessee Anime Convention (MTAC) is a three day anime convention hosted in Murfresboro, Tennessee. Organized by ArtsCubed, the convention has grown substantially from it’s modest 300 person attendance in 1999 to a whopping 9,796 head count last year!

This year, MTAC boasted a prestigious line-up of events and guests including Martin Billany, Daniel Coglan, Jillian Coglan, DJ Pete Ellison, Dan Green, Samantha Inoue-Harte, Vedetta Marie, Vic Mignogna, Marianne Miller, Chii Sakurabi, and Eric Stuart.

Site correspondant Mickey McClendon was on the scene to capture some of the magic on camera and on film. Fun fact: it was his very first convention!
Check out some snippets of the con (and some very unique interviews!) below!

My personal favorite, a shout out from Little Kuriboh himself- Martin Billany!

Things You See at AnachroCon: Beyond Amazing Balloons!

anachrocon 122I wish I caught the name of the man who so cleverly used air and bendable latex to bring so many smiles to the crowds around him. Dressed in what looked like a lab coat and always amicable, this wonderful AnachroCon patron plastered smiles on everyone he encountered that day. At one point I witnessed him bridge the gap between steampunk convention and cheerleading convention as he happily forged hats and scepters for the sparkly-lidded young ladies waiting for a meal at the hotel.

Below, you can witness his amazing talents at work as he forges a crown worthy of awesome author Esther Wheelmaker!

If anyone knows this man’s identity or has links to his exploits and expertise, please share them. He definitely added a splash of flair and color to the con, and deserves every ounce of recognition!anachrocon 034

Things You See at AnachroCon: Veronique Chevalier

veroniqueThe day was ending, but the concerts were just beginning. We all clip-clopped our corseted way to the main hall to revel in some amazing music…and were in for quite the treat when we arrived!

Veronique Chevalier combines Parisian showmanship, a sharp accent, and a wicked sense of humor into one dynamite act. For those who weren’t able to roll in the aisles in person, check out her stellar performance of “Garlic with a G” below!

I know, I know…you want more, right? Well here you go! Check out more from Veronique at Weird Val’s Homepage  and Veronique’s Facebook !

Future Card Buddyfight’s Opening Brings Back that 90’s Magic

I haven’t heard an anime opening like this since the late 90’s!! Back then, translations were hit or miss even on subtitled versions, dubbing was hardly the respected profession it is today, and few theme songs were sent to market without a random, often nonsensical, English phrase or sixteen.

Today, “Future Card Buddyfight” brings that flavor back with a faithfulness to upbeat nonsense that borders on parody. (“Let’s Fighting Love,” anyone?)

This song is so phenomenal that every video I’ve found of it comes with subtitles– as though anyone exposed instantly thought, “Yeah, people are going to need to see these lyrics.”

However, the font can be a little hard to read at points, and I’m sure you’ll want to commit this classic to memory as soon as possible, so I’ve taken the liberty of transcribing it below as well:

Future Buddy Cardfight Opening 1- “Card of the Future”

(Future Buddy Fight!)
These powerful deep bonds connecting us, buddy,
Ain’t ever giving up, crush and build again,
Break out your future card!

Getting into it with our stunning moves, yeah!
Don’t matter to us we can change the way it’s done,
‘Cause we are, (’cause we are), the irrepressible Buddy Fighter!

With our flame we can burn up the darkness,
The sun will shine on through, illuminate your soul,
On we go! (On we go!) We will deliver your call to tomorrow!

Such fantastic inspiration moving into new territory,
I charge and I draw, run as fast as the wind,
We’re invincible!

(Future Buddy Fight!)

These powerful deep bonds connecting us, buddy!
Ain’t ever giving up, crush and build again!

(Future Buddy Fight!)

Meaningless fantasies of what the future brings,
We don’t need such goals, we don’t need to dream! ((<-This is by far my favorite line!! XD))

(Future Buddy Call!)

Blowing open the walls of the cave!
Fight on with all the great skill that you have!
This, our never ending story, so let’s do it our own way!

Break out your Future Card!

As far as the anime itself goes, Future Buddy Cardfight falls squarely into the “shows about products” category, and demonstrates the expected levels of heavy-handed cliches and tropes that usually come along with that package. (You know- “believe in yourself,” “don’t follow the crowd,” “the one kid who’s ‘special’/’destined for greatness’,” “solving problems via card games,” “the power of friendship”….all that good stuff.)

At two episodes in, I can conclude that this will not be an overly cerebral or otherwise stand-out show, and probably isn’t anything worth following unless you’re looking for the animated equivalent to a partial lobotomy or need a pixelated babysitter for a half-hour.

To it’s credit though, the show does manage to use “buddy” more often and with the most gravity I’ve ever heard applied to the word since South Park’s Canadian arguments.

So that’s something.

Suffering from an Excess of Free Time? There’s an App for That.

Recently, I  was fortunate enough to receive a free piece of technology thanks to sheer luck, online procrastination, and a corporation that decided to trade off  iPad Minis for advertising.

Normally, I’d be super grateful– and don’t get me wrong, I am– but for once I feel legitimized in being a jerk because the corporation in question just happens to, ironically, be one that had kinda screwed me over in the past.

So Ha-Ha! In their FACES!!! The fates have smiled on me and struck them down, right?? I mean, after all the grief I went through with Verizon in the past, I’m definitely not signing back up with them,  so they’ve made no gains from their gamble with me. …Although maybe they were aiming wider. Maybe they counted on me spreading the word via blog. …

...Clever bastards.

…Clever bastards.

Now, I mostly jest. Mostly. I personally dislike Verizon still, and as long as I’ve hopped on the jerk train I’ll add that I never much liked Apple either. The layout always confused me, and I wasn’t good at navigating or using it. (“I don’t want to go on a safari, I want to open the internet, dammit!!”) Therefore the only logical, even-handed solution was to conclude that all Apple products were the devil and also stupid.

How wrong I was. (About Apple, anyways.)

I’ve recently learned that one difference between apple as a fruit and Apple as technology is that while I would quickly throw one out if I received it for free in the mail (or via old lady. Witches be tripping, yo), the other I would keep by my side daily until the end of time.

I’ve also recently learned that apps on the iPad Mini are kind of freaking amazing. I’ve also realized that they are dangerously entertaining and could easily suck the free time out of me with the speed and tenacity of mosquitoes at a swamp side nude beach.

So, in the fashion of old-fashion chain letters, I plan on ridding myself of this curse by sharing it with the world!

My Favorite iPad games (right now):

Kingdoms of Zenia: Dragon Wars: imageImagine if Farmville and Warcraft had a one night stand in Middle Earth… Sprinkle that with blue meth and stir in any friend that uses apple, and that might get you close to what this thing is like. Half civilization simulator, half rts, half rpg-esque grind machine, and all mind-numbing addiction. This is one of those online games that requires you check in a few times per day to harvest various materials and boost your friend’s productions. While you’re there, you might as well build up your kingdom, or complete a few challenges, maybe save the world by battle questing, or refuel your troop supply. Along with the typical civilization building rigamarole, the battle portion of the game employs some strategy as you recruit and arrange various melee and distance troops before battle. It also offers the option to engage in some PvP “raiding” as well. This game is easy to put down, but hard to leave alone.

At least one minion is happy.

Pocket Minions

I…I don’t even know what to call it besides cute. You control tiny little people and try to use your resources to build your castle higher and higher. You only have so many resources to build rooms. Certain rooms recruit certain minions. Certain minions make certain resources. All minions require certain things (like toilets and furnaces) to remain happy. That’s the short version of the rules, really. It involves limited strategy and a lot of free time. You have to collect resources from the cute tiny people manually though, and that cuts down on how addictive it actually is. I’m currently uninterested after completing two towers, but those two towers were a lot of fun to raise up.

Miku Flick & Miku Flick/02 image

So. Much. Love! This is a super addictive take on the usual rhythm games featuring songs and video from the Vocaloid series of synthetic singers. In the flick series, not only do you tap in rhythm, but you have to find the consonant in a 9 panel array and then flick in the direction of the vowel. Needless to say, this ups the ante on concentration and difficulty, but with fluid, intuitive gameplay it adds up to a really rewarding challenge. For those interested in improving hiragana recognition, it’s AMAZING as it has three modes for the phonetics: kana, roman alphabet, and a combination mode. Both titles cost money to play, but are well worth it. Flick/02 is my favorite at the moment, purely because it features characters like Luka, Meiko, Kaito, and the Kagamine twins rather than just Miku. Progression unlocks additional songs and modes, and there are song packs available for purchase if you get bored with what’s available. All the featured songs also have background music videos featuring the characters, as well as stand alone PVs and a karaoke mode you can access when you’re not in the mood to play! <33

I’m just a little boy!!

Limbo

I remember the buzz when this game first hit Steam way back when, and was super excited when I saw that it was available on iOS. It’s everything I expected from the trailers– dark, highly stylized, haunting… An absolutely unique, puzzle based platformer that immerses you in the struggles of a young boy trapped in an ominous world. My only complaint is that the controls, especially the jump controls, can be a little sticky at times with the touch system. …There’s nothing more frustrating then having your poor little shadow boy brutally decapitated because your touch screen decided that you wanted to walk INTO the bear trap rather than jump OVER it. Other than that– absolutely gorgeous. (PS. Spiders are horrifying, and those other shadow kids are dicks. :P)

Infinity Blade

imageHoly crap…do you see that graphic? I saw that graphic. I saw that graphic and then bought this 5 dollar-ish game without knowing anything about it. I’m glad I did. Infinity Blade is dazzling visually and has one of the best shield and sword combat systems I’ve ever played with. Each battle calls on you to observe and react to your opponent’s attacks by either dodging, blocking, or parrying. Certain chains of these tactics will cause a break in your enemy’s defense and allow you to unleash chains of directional attacks, magic, and special moves. There’s a fruit ninja like quality once you do hit an opening, but it’s still very satisfying to unleash some furious slice and dicing. Infinity Blade also has a strong RPG element and an interesting storyline. The final boss appears relatively quickly, and the odds seem insurmountable…and are. Upon losing, you return to the opening screen 19-21 years later as your own progeny (fortunately, the new, youthful Swordy McSlash-Slash has kept all the armor and upgrades you had previously), and proceed to go forth in an attempt to avenge your father. Sure it sounds repetitive, but at Bloodline #4 the updated enemies and increasing familiarity with the game mechanics have continued to keep me entertained.

Paper 53

image

I’m not sure if this app appeals to the super artsy, but for the aspiring artsy type (like me!), it’s a really neat little utility.

Half fingerpaint, a quarter microsoft paint, and a quarter photoshop, Paper 53 acts as a fun, interactive toolbox and canvas combo with a lot of features and abilities that scale with talent and practice. The interface is straightforward, and there are multiple albums to help sort and store doodles, daydreams, and legitimate attempts at making something you might one day want to show another living being.

So yes- I dig this app. I use this app. I’m in awe of some of the things I’ve seen from really talented people using this app. …But I will make one caveat here– for a free app, this one sure isn’t.

Yeah, yeah– you can download the bare bones for free, but see the picture? That’s what you get.

Background and a pencil.

… Have…fun?

As it comes, I think the app would hold my interest for about half a blink, but with upgrades it becomes much, much more. For under 15 dollars, you get markers, pencils, paint (my favorite~!), and a color blender…and even if you happen to be not-so-artistically inclined like me, it’s awesome enough to make you feel pretty alright about your imagineering made pixeled.

So at the moment, these are the titles I’ve chosen to while away my free time with~!

If you frequently find yourself beleaguered with an excess of free time, they might just be the tickets to blissful preoccupation (or even procrastination~!)

Game on~!
